Aerial Firefighters Gearing Up For The 2012 Wildland Forest Fire Season

Posted by admin on January 25, 2012 at 7:40 pm | Filled Under: History| No comments

Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 25, 2012

“With near record lows in rainfall, combined with record high temperatures in much of California in December–plus ongoing dry conditions throughout much of the Southwest–the aerial firefighters are preparing for an earlier than normal deployment of assets, given the prevailing high fire dangers, especially in those parts of the country,” said Tom Eversole, Executive Director of the American Helicopter Services and Aerial Firefighting Association (AHSAFA) in Washington.

????”For us, the 2011 fire season never really went away,” noted Dan Sweet, Public Relations Manager for Columbia Helicopters in Portland, Oregon. “For instance, we have had a Columbia Helicopters Vertol 107-II in Big Spring, Texas, since March of last year, and expect to keep that helicopter there for the immediate future.” Sweet noted that Columbia performs heavy maintenance, as well as pilot training during the winter months. This year, 15-20 pilots will be assigned to four of the company’s aircraft–three Columbia Helicopters Vertol 107-IIs, and one Columbia Helicopters Model 234 Chinook–which will be operated under US Forest Service (USFS) exclusive-use contracts for firefighting. That is the same number operated for the USFS in 2011. Concurrently, 30-40 field maintenance crews are undergoing training.

????Portland/Central Point Oregon based Erickson Air-Crane has yet to see a break in activity pertaining to the fire season on a global level. Currently the company holds 5 contracted locations in Australia between the Central, Southern and Eastern portions. In December a 6th location was requested by the Fire Authorities for Erickson to provide an S-64 Helitanker for Western Australia operating out of Perth. Half of these will return to the United States and the other half will be shipped to Greece under contract with the Greek fire authorities. San Diego Gas and Electric requested an addition S-64 in August to augment its power line construction and fire standby through the middle of January 2012 for the greater San Diego City and County areas. Erickson is also gearing up for the U.S. fire season with 6 S-64s under exclusive use contracts with the U.S. Forest Service with 2 additional aircraft assigned to the city of Los Angeles, CA. Erickson Air-Crane will be operating 16 of their own aircraft and providing maintenance and crewing for up to 5 additional customer owned S-64s.

???? Intermountain Helicopters of Sonora, California is also getting ready for an active fire season through an aggressive maintenance program on its Bell 212 and Bell 412 twin engine helicopters, according to Rick Livingston, Director of Operations. Currently, Intermountain Helicopters has a six person staff, which includes four pilots and three mechanics, some of whom are cross-trained to fly and maintain the aircraft. “All annual inspections are done prior to the fire season, in order to avoid component failure in the field during mid-season, Livingston noted. “That’s why, when a component is within about 100 hours of change out, we’ll do it immediately, rather than let it go to the life limit, and risk a failure in the field. We have a very proactive, preventative maintenance program, not just for the helicopters, but the fuel trucks, and maintenance trailers that go out with them.”

????Fresno, California-based Rogers Helicopters’ Vice-President Robin Rogers reported the company, which operates a mixed fleet of 11 single and twin-engine helicopters, has two Bell 212s and one Eurocopter A-star helicopter, along with a fixed wing Turbo Commander aircraft, ready for dispatch. “In addition to annual aircraft scheduled maintenance checks, our staff of 25 mechanics also perform annual inspections of our support equipment, which includes a combination of 30 fuel trucks, and maintenance trailers,” said Rogers. “We also inspect all of the equipment that needs to be aboard each aircraft, by contract, such as the Bambi buckets, and long lines.” Recurrent and upgrade pilot training is also done concurrently with the maintenance period. Right now, Rogers Helicopters employs 40 pilots, of which 22 are full time. As with maintenance, all pilot training is done in-house. “Our training is pretty standardized, because there is really no way to predict the severity of the fire season until it happens,” said Rogers. “If history is any indication, you would usually see fire activity in California and the Southwest in the March or April time frame. But with the current dry conditions and the Santa Ana winds, a wildfire could break out any time.”

????Columbia Helicopters, Erickson Air-Crane, Intermountain Helicopters, and Rogers Helicopters are members of the American Helicopter Services & Aerial Firefighting Association (AHSAFA), the Washington-based trade association representing commercial operators of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft engaged in aerial wildland firefighting.

“Last Dinner on the Titanic” Served in St. Louis to Mark The Centennial of the Luxury Liner

Posted by admin on January 22, 2012 at 8:55 am | Filled Under: History| No comments

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) January 20, 2012

Cruise into the Gateway City to experience the history, fashion, food and music of the elegant Edwardian era during St. Louis Titanic Centennial Weekend, April 13-15, 2012. For more information, click on http://www.explorestlouis.com or http://www.titanic2012stl.com or call 314-657-5033. Tickets for all events and accommodations are also available through Metrotix at 314-534-1111 or http://www.metrotix.com.

One hundred years ago this April, a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch scored one of the biggest stories of the 20th century the sinking of the H.M.S. Titanic.

St. Louis journalist Carlos Hurd was aboard the Carpathia, the vessel that scooped up Titanics lifeboat-clinging survivors. Hurd and his wife Katherine were the first to interview the eyewitnesses to the downing of the unsinkable ocean liner. He wrote the world-wide headline story on rolls of toilet paper during the voyage that brought those rescued into New York harbor. Today, the legendary ship continues to make headlines in St. Louis where a weekend of special commemorative events will take place to remember this ever-fascinating piece of history.

On Friday, April 13, the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park serves up an Edwardian Champagne Reception prior to a screening of the classic 1958 Titanic film, A Night to Remember. Guests also will view Titanic-related artifacts from the Museums collection.

The highlight of the weekend takes place at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Saturday, April 14. The Foxs executive chef Stephen Proctor along with the culinary teaching staff at LEcole Culiniare will recreate the original First Class menu served to Titanic guests on the actual 100th anniversary of the last dinner on the ship. The historic menu was meticulously researched to authentically recreate the sumptuous eleven-course meal and accompanying wines. The Titanic-sized menu includes oysters a la Russe, poached salmon, filet mignon, chicken Lyonnaise, roasted squab and Waldorf pudding.

Diners will have the opportunity to experience A Taste of History: Last Dinner on the Titanic while seated on the stage at St. Louis Fabulous Fox Theatre. The evening is black tie. Dinner guests are encouraged to wear vintage attire (white tie for men). Upon arrival, guests will receive a boarding pass and envelope containing the name and biography of an actual first-class passenger from the Titanic. Guests can be assured that the only ice afloat at the Fox this evening will be found in drinking glasses.

Prior to dinner, a period-style cocktail reception featuring live music popular during 1912 will fill the Fox Theatres elaborate Grand Lobby. Between courses, guests will be entertained with incredible stories about the Titanic told by actors portraying passengers and crew who had been aboard the fateful ship including Missouris-own Unsinkable Molly Brown. Proceeds from the evening benefit the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation, a not-for-profit which fosters and promotes the performing arts in the St. Louis area.

Those who survive the Saturday evening soiree can partake in a special champagne brunch at the Piper Palm House, the oldest standing greenhouse west of the Mississippi River. Located in St. Louis Victorian-designed Tower Grove Park, the Palm Houses distinctive architecture, soaring ceiling, stately windows and exotic plants, resemble the Titanics Verandah Caf?. The brunch will be recreated from a Titanic first class breakfast menu. The buffet service meal features, along with other delicacies, smoked salmon, lamb chops, sirloin steak, prepared-to-order omelets, fruits and baked goods.

The three events range in price from $ 10 to $ 500, so everyone can step back in time and experience the history, fashion, food and music of the elegant Edwardian Era. A special St. Louis Titanic Weekend Travel Package is available at the newly restored Cheshire, a landmark hotel property that embodies the charm and authenticity of a traditional British inn with all the modern conveniences of today. The $ 389 hotel package includes deluxe accommodation for two nights (Friday and Saturday/double occupancy), an English continental breakfast on Saturday, complimentary high tea on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., and round-trip transportation to the events at the Missouri History Museum, The Fox Theatre and the Piper Palm House.

True Titanic buffs will want to tour historic Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis. St. Louisan Elizabeth McMillan Madill Robert was returning home from a year-long European tour and lodging in Cabin B-3 aboard the Titanic. She, her daughter Georgette Madill, niece Elizabeth Allen and maid Emilie Kreuchen were all rescued from Lifeboat 2. Mrs. Madill Roberts died in 1955 and is buried on the Madill family lot. Also resting at Bellefontaine are Carlos and Katherine Hurd who were traveling on the Carpathia, the White Star Line vessel that rescued Titanic lifeboat passengers. Hurd enlisted his wife to help him gather interviews for the news story of the century. Stop by the Bellefontaine Cemetery office at 4847 West Florissant Avenue for a complimentary map to these gravesites and those of hundreds of notable persons including explorer William Clark, Civil War officers, beer barons, literary personalities and more. Information also is found at http://www.bellefontainecemetery.org.

Posted by admin on January 18, 2012 at 11:34 pm | Filled Under: History| No comments

San Francisco, California (PRWEB) January 18, 2012

SmartRecruiters, the free social recruiting platform, announced $ 5 million in Series A financing led by Silicon Valleys Mayfield Fund.

SmartRecruiters cloud-based platform takes the complexity out of the recruiting process from sourcing to hiring. Since its founding in September 2010, over 10,000 businesses have signed up to use SmartRecruiters. The company plans to use the funding to make its product even more awesome.

Next-Gen SaaS: Free as a Model

SmartRecruiters platform sits in the cloud and is entirely free to use. The company generates revenue exclusively from selling third-party recruiting services. This disruptive free SaaS model is the logical next step in the recent consumerization of cloud software for the social enterprise.

SaaS 2.0 has given rise to innovative companies like Marketo, and now SmartRecruiters is pushing the envelope further with a free and frictionless business model for hiring, said Rajeev Batra, Partner, Mayfield Fund. When you combine a serial entrepreneur with deep industry expertise like SmartRecruiters founder/CEO Jerome Ternynck, with a disruptive model, you can transform a market and build an impactful company.

Disrupting the $ 400B Recruiting Industry

SmartRecruiters all-in-one easy to use platform combines free social software and best in class third-party services, such as: free job sites, job boards, social networks, assessment services, background check services and recruiting process outsourcing. It also aggregates data across all users to help individual businesses make smarter decisions in sourcing and selecting the best candidates for any given job in any given location.

This innovative model leverages the social web to provide much needed transparency to the traditional $ 400B recruiting industry.

By bringing advanced recruitment technology to small businesses at no cost, SmartRecruiters can help companies find great talent, leverage social networks, and improve their quality of hire in a highly affordable way, said Josh Bersin, President and CEO, Bersin & Associates, a leading research and advisory firm in corporate talent acquisition.

Hiring Made Easy

A recent study from Bersin & Associates found that small firms pay a median figure of $ 3,665 in recruiting costs per hire, compared with $ 1,949 per hire at companies employing 10,000 employees or more. By offering a free social recruiting platform, SmartRecruiters aims to empower small and medium-sized businesses the largest hiring segment and in effect, democratize access to talent.

As the ultimate platform for candidate sourcing and management, SmartRecruiters lets businesses:

????easily create branded online job ads

Millions of Jobs at Stake

There are currently 3 million jobs open in the US and 80% of small businesses report a difficulty to hire in this economy, that is unacceptable, said SmartRecruiters founder and CEO Jerome Ternynck. I think we can do a much better job giving businesses easy access to the talent they need.

Search friction in the labor market accounts for much of the unfortunate fact that 23 million Americans are either unemployed or underemployed. Yet, we live in a connected world in which hiring should be easy.

Its time to leverage technology to bring recruiting back to its roots as a social activity and get people back to work, stated Ternynck.

By giving small businesses a free social recruiting platform, SmartRecruiters plans to do exactly that, making hiring easy for millions of businesses.

ISL Online Launches ISL AlwaysOn 2.0 and Adds File Sharing to the Remote Access Software

Posted by admin on January 15, 2012 at 2:07 pm | Filled Under: History| No comments

Swindon, UK (PRWEB UK) 13 January 2012

ISL Online, the global online collaboration software provider, has released a new version of enterprise remote access software, ISL AlwaysOn 2.0, which introduces unlimited file sharing and extends some other capabilities of the software.

Unlimited file sharing: access files remotely and give access to others

The new ISL AlwaysOn 2.0 allows users to share files with anyone and easily access the selected files faster than ever. There is no need to connect to the remote computer to access remote files. A user simply logs in to their ISL Online web account at http://www.islonline.com from anywhere. There, the user can see the list of remote computers and download shared files. Each shared folder has a unique URL link which can be emailed to a remote user. This way, files, too big to be sent via email, can be shared between users online. Furthermore, if given the ‘full access’ permission by an account owner, guest users can update files or even upload new files to the shared folder. A service similar to Dropbox but with an important difference – there is no shared quota. The account storage space is only limited by the size of the local computer’s hard disk.

Besides being able to access remote files on the fly the ISL AlwaysOn 2.0 also allows you to execute some other actions from a web account:

????Wake on LAN (WOL) a remote computer
????Change the access password to one or all remote computers
????Shut down the remote computer
????Retrieve remote system information

Start remote access session from a desktop application

The ISL AlwaysOn 2.0 remote access software includes the desktop application which simplifies the start of a remote session and lets user:

????See the list of all remote computers and connect in seconds
????Manage computer status, remote users and file sharing (local files)
????Check the access history

ISL AlwaysOn 2.0 is available at http://www.islonline.com/isl-alwayson/.

New Year’s Resolutions to Exercise Pay Off for Heart Disease Patients

Posted by admin on January 8, 2012 at 7:30 pm | Filled Under: History| No comments

Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) January 06, 2012

In all parts of the world, the start of a new year inspires adults to give up junk food, join a gym or make healthier choices. For one group, the resolution to become more active could literally be the difference between life and death. Research released today by the American College of Sports Medicine finds that being more physically active can help adults suffering from heart disease keep premature death at bay.

The study, Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Mortality Risk: Possible Protective Mechanisms? is published in this months issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise?, the official journal of ACSM. The research team, which included Lee Ingle, Ph.D., examined the relationship between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and mortality risk in patients with cardiovascular disease.

It is well established that regular, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity reduces the risk of future cardiac events in healthy individuals and individuals with existing cardiovascular disease,” said Ingle, an academic with the Carnegie Research Institute at Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom. “What are not well understood are the biological mechanisms responsible for reducing the burden of risk. We examined the extent to which changes in typical cardiovascular risk factors explained the association between physical activity and death in individuals with cardiovascular disease.

The study included 1,429 participants, both male and female, with physician-diagnosed heart disease. At a baseline visit, participants reported demographic information, health status, disease history, smoking habits and physical activity levels. Shortly after the baseline visit, nurses recorded medication and body mass, collected blood samples, and measured blood pressure and resting heart rate. Within seven years, 446 of the 1,429 participants died. Death certificates linked 213 of the deaths to cardiovascular disease.

Participation in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity at least three times per week was associated with a much lower risk of cardiovascular-related death. Physically active participants demonstrated significantly lower levels of body mass, diabetes and inflammatory risk. Metabolic risk factors (including body mass index, total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio, and physician-diagnosed diabetes) and inflammatory markers (including C-reactive protein) explained an estimated 12.8 percent and 15.4 percent, respectively, of the association between physical activity and mortality risk.

The main finding from this study was that moderate-to-vigorous physical activity reduces the risk of future cardiac events, in part, by improving metabolic and inflammatory risk markers in patients with cardiovascular disease, said Ingle.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart diseases is the leading cause of death in the U.S. The Exercise is Medicine? initiative offers public tools to help adults combat chronic conditions, such as heart disease, with physical activity.

The American College of Sports Medicine is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world. More than 45,000 international, national and regional members and certified professionals are dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.

Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise? is the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine, and is available from Lippincott Williams & Wilkins at 1-800-638-6423. For a complete copy of the research paper (Vol. 44, No. 1, pages 84-88) or to speak with a leading sports medicine expert on the topic, contact the Department of Communications and Public Information at 317-637-9200 ext. 133 or 127. Virtual Edge Institute Releases Its Top 7 Predictions for Virtual Meeting Technology for The New Year

Posted by admin on January 5, 2012 at 10:00 am | Filled Under: History| No comments

Pleasanton, CA (PRWEB) January 04, 2012

The New Year brings new possibilities for virtual meeting technologies and virtual meeting organizers, reports Michael Doyle, founder of Virtual Edge Institute.

As the organization prepares to bring together leaders from the digital meeting industry at the 2012 Virtual Edge Summit in San Diego, CA from January 9-12, Doyle released his top seven predictions for the virtual meetings industry for 2012.

1. More movement toward a simpler less is more approach

The trend toward a more simplified, web page-based graphical interface for online events and meetings will continue in 2012. Platform vendors are moving in the less is better direction with their new versions.

2. More embedded event and meeting solutions

Events in 2012 will be open and easily accessible to attendees wherever they are located. Many event and meeting producers will want to take some code and embed their events and learning programs into their existing websites to simplify the attendee experience.

3. More convergence of event technology

The competitive edge will go to those vendors who have the ability to converge registration, website, mobile, community/networking and virtual extensions into a single solution. Most digital event solution providers will continue to move toward open architecture and a modular approach that will allow the embedding of elements driven by physical event registration and mobile communication systems.

4. More 365 environments

Although there will always be the need for online environments for single events, the trend will be toward building perpetual environments that are available year-round to allow for better utilization and monetization of content. Users and producers alike will seek easy-to-use solutions that include their history, sufficient storage for recorded materials and a familiar social network.

5. More shuttering of virtual event platforms

Currently, there are too many virtual event platforms with too few distinctions, Doyle explains. Mobile technology has changed the game and what was a workable platform six months ago is now on the verge of being leapfrogged. That being the case, we will likely see new entrants that come into the market based on the latest web services, mobile and cloud architecture as others continue to drop off the radar screen.

6. More predictable pricing models and shared risk/reward

In 2012, more simplified and more predictable pricing models will emerge. Some technology providers will choose a true Software as a Service (SaaS) model with limited services, while others will focus more on the services than on the technology platform. Some of these services will be geared toward making the event producer more successful from an ROI standpoint and well see compensation models that reward or share in success.

7. More facilities will bring their Internet costs down while others will go plug n play

Internet charges for streaming content from events and meetings will come down as the strategic value of hybrid events continues to grow. Convention centers will find it a competitive advantage to offer great connectivity packages that enable attendees and event producers to share their event experiences via low or no-cost Internet and Wi-Fi. Some centers will also seek to become leaders in the digital revolution by offering in-house streaming studios, streaming services and built-in virtual presenter solutions. Event producers will need to negotiate the digital elements of their physical events before they sign their facility rental contract to get the best deals.

To summarize, Doyle notes, “the theme is more, more, more for 2012, though not necessarily more of the same. Experimentation and ongoing adjustment to digital strategies will be with us for the foreseeable future as we strive to add value to event, meeting, marketing and learning programs with an ever-growing arsenal of digital tools.

Largest Exhibition of Vietnamese Ceramics in North America Opens in January 2012 at the Birmingham Museum of Art

Posted by admin on January 2, 2012 at 12:38 am | Filled Under: History| No comments

(PRWEB) December 31, 2011

The largest U.S. exhibition to date of Vietnamese ceramics will open in January at the Birmingham Museum of Art, revealing another strength of our outstanding collection, and showing to the public for the first time, one of the top three finest collections of such wares in North America.

Dragons and Lotus Blossoms: Vietnamese Ceramics from the Birmingham Museum of Art is the first major exhibition of Vietnamese pottery in the United States. The exhibition is co-curated by Dr. Donald A. Wood, the BMAs Curator of Asian Art, and John Stevenson, one of the preeminent experts in the field. The exhibition, in the Museums Jemison Galleries, will be on display January 22 through April 8, 2012. The exhibition is free, and open to the public.

This is an opportunity to discover beautiful works of art that are rarely seen in the U.S., Wood said. It is also an opportunity to explore the rich history of a country that not only played an important role in the recent history of the U.S., but also is a vital part of our future.

Through judicious purchases and generous donations, the BMA has acquired over several decades, one of the finest collections of Vietnamese ceramics, keeping company with the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The entire BMA collection –more than 200 pieces of Vietnamese ceramics — will be on display. The collection is fully illustrated in the accompanying catalogue, which features important essays by Stevenson, Wood, and Philippe Truong, an independent expert in Vietnamese ceramics. The catalogue is published and distributed by The University of Washington Press.

There are very few publications in English about Vietnamese ceramics, Wood said. This catalogue contains the most current scholarship on this topic by some of the most respected experts in this field.

As the first large-scale exhibition of Vietnamese ceramics in America, It is also the first exhibition to explore the fascinating history and variety of Vietnamese wares in the U.S., Wood said.? Our collection is rich in 15th and 16th century Vietnamese export wares modeled on the great blue-and-white wares from the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen in China.? It is also particularly strong in Vietnamese ceramics made for domestic use and never exported, a neglected area in which it has been difficult to find material.? The collection spans nearly 2000 years of Vietnamese ceramic history.

Besides displaying a stellar collection of Vietnamese works, the exhibition brings to Birmingham John Stevenson, one of the leading scholars and connoisseurs in the field, Wood said. He is known and respected not only here in the U.S. but all over the world for his pioneer studies in this under-appreciated field.? His 1997 book Vietnamese Ceramics: A Separate Tradition was the first in-depth study of Vietnamese ceramics in English.? He has seen and studied our entire collection and has been key in helping to identify many of the pieces. John is an old friend and it has been a pleasure to work with him on this project.

Stevenson will open the exhibition with a lecture at 2:30 p.m. January 22, Vietnamese Ceramics, the Development of an Art Form. Also accompanying Dragons and Lotus Blossoms will be an Artbreak tour of the exhibition led by Wood on February 21 at noon; a book discussion on Dragon Sea: A True Tale of Treasure, Archeology and Greed off the Coast of Vietnam, a book, which tells the tale behind some of the ceramics on display in Dragons and Lotus Blossoms, March 8 at noon; then on First Thursday, April 5 at 6 p.m., a curator-led tour and a Vietnamese film.

The History of Vietnamese Ceramics at the Birmingham Museum of Art

As early as the 1970s, members of the Asian Art Society at the BMA recognized the beauty of Vietnamese ceramics and the potential for creating a significant collection in a little known and under-appreciated field. After amassing the core collection of 15th and 16th -century blue-and-white export wares, the BMA built on the support of the Asian Art Society, buying more export wares at the rich international auctions of shipwreck ceramics that since the year 2000 have revolutionized the study of Southeast Asian ceramics.

In 2010 the Vietnamese ceramic collection of Mr. William M. Spencer III, a long-time Museum patron and a founding member of the Asian Art Society, was bequeathed to the Museum. This gift greatly strengthened the BMAs holdings of Vietnamese ceramics made for domestic use and never exported, a neglected area in which it has been difficult to find material. This, and the continuing judicious purchase of outstanding pieces over the years, has resulted in a superb collection, with many fine, undamaged, and unique examples.

This is a collection that evolved through local interest and support, Wood said. It is a collection in which the people of Birmingham can take great pride.

The History Behind the Art

In the 1960s and 70s, the destinies of Vietnam and the United States became tightly intertwined through a war which profoundly colored the way Vietnam is viewed. Few Americans are aware of Vietnams distinctive, millennia-long, cultural history. While they defended their independence against powerful enemies over the centuries, the Vietnamese developed subtle and sophisticated cultural traditions, including ceramics, which form an unusually important part of the countrys artistic identity.

While many art objects have fared badly in Vietnam victims of time, or climate, or war — ceramics have survived as a physical form of Vietnams historical memory. Along with literature, poetry, and music, ceramics are among the most significant manifestations of Vietnams cultural heritage to remain after many centuries.

Few museums in the West exhibit more than a few token Vietnamese ceramics bought at recent high-profile auctions. The Birmingham Museum of Art is the shining exception. Dragons and Lotus Blossoms brings the importance of Vietnams rich cultural history into brilliant focus.
